·       What is obesity?

It is having too much fat on the body.

·         What are the reasons for obesity in children?
There are many reasons for obesity including eating too much junk food, not doing enough exercise, playing on computer all day, watching TV, parents are overweight as well and passing on unhealthy lifestyle to children, as well as genetics.

·         Is obesity only a national problem?
No, obesity is not a national problem. It is a worldwide problem.

·         What do statistics show?
From 1985 to 1995 the number of obese 7–15 year olds almost doubled. Overweight children have more than tripled over the last century. It is predicted that 65 per cent of young Australians will be overweight or obese by 2020.

·         What is making the obesity problem worse?
There have been a lot of changes in society which is contributing to a  more obese society. The problems with society are people is eating more or doing less exercise.  The following are reasons why this has happened: food is less expensive, more takeaway food and amount of food you can buy has increased. There are a lot more marketing of food and drink that is high energy. Less activity because of more cars, people work more and so spend less time outside. Exercise in school has also decreased.

·         Does obesity have an impact on children's health?
Yes, it does.

·         If yes, explain how?
Obesity can have an effect on children is they are more likely to remain obese as adolescents and become overweight or obese as adults. About 80 per cent of obese adolescents may become diabetics, or have heart attack when they are adult.
What are the other impacts caused by obesity in children?
Obesity can affect how children feel about themselves and how they get along with others. They are more likely to have low self-esteem, which may affect aspects of their lives such as making friend and doing well at school.

·         What is the treatment?
Patients can see their general  practitioner, and they can change lifestyle and eat healthy food.
